Crypto home invasions have emerged as the dominant form of physical attack against digital asset holders, rising sharply to 20 incidents in the first half of 2026 from just one a year earlier, according to blockchain security firm CertiK. The alarming trend underscores a fundamental shift in criminal tactics, as bad actors increasingly bypass sophisticated digital safeguards by resorting to direct physical coercion of cryptocurrency holders and their families.

CertiK verified 52 wrench attacks globally during H1 2026, representing a 33.3% increase from 39 incidents during the same period in 2025. Kidnappings also climbed to 16 cases from 12, while robberies declined from five to one. The data reveals that criminals are adapting their methods to target the human element of crypto security rather than technological vulnerabilities.

The financial exposure linked to these attacks reached approximately $124.1 million in H1 2026, a dramatic spike from $10.5 million a year earlier. This figure encompasses confirmed thefts, ransom demands, victim transfers, frozen or recovered assets, and failed ransom attempts. The scale of financial impact demonstrates the severe consequences these physical attacks pose to the crypto community.

France has become the epicenter of crypto-related physical violence, accounting for 33 of the 52 verified wrench attacks, or nearly two-thirds of the global total. Europe as a continent accounted for 39 of the 52 incidents. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that authorities had recorded 77 crypto-linked kidnappings, extortion cases, or attempted extortion cases during H1 2026, up from 45 in the entire year of 2025.

CertiK attributed France’s concentration of attacks to its visible crypto ecosystem and data breaches that connect personal identities and home addresses with perceived crypto wealth. The firm noted it employed a narrower methodology than French authorities, counting only publicly reported incidents it could independently verify. This distinction suggests the actual number of attacks may be even higher than reported figures.

In response to the escalating threat, French authorities launched a dedicated prevention platform and rapid-alert system for crypto holders and professionals. These emergency measures have resulted in 200 arrests so far. The government’s proactive stance reflects growing recognition that crypto security extends beyond digital infrastructure to physical safety concerns.

The rise in physical coercion attacks challenges conventional self-custody advice that has long emphasized holding one’s own private keys. CertiK recommended that crypto holders implement multisignature or multiparty computation arrangements to mitigate risk. Additional protective measures include withdrawal delays, spending limits, and geographically separated signers so that one threatened individual cannot immediately access or transfer all available assets.

For crypto holders concerned about physical security threats, experts recommend evaluating personal safety alongside digital security measures. This includes assessing home security, limiting public disclosure of crypto holdings, and considering how personal information might be connected to perceived wealth through data breaches or social engineering.

The CertiK report serves as a sobering reminder that cryptocurrency security encompasses far more than technical safeguards.
