Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) has confirmed the seizure of another 500 Bitcoin worth approximately 27 million euros ($30.9 million) in criminal proceeds. The latest recovery, conducted in collaboration with Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, brings the total Bitcoin seized by CAB in 2026 to 1,500 BTC, valued at around $92.4 million.
The seizure underscores the growing role of law enforcement agencies in disrupting cryptocurrency-based criminal activity across Europe. CAB stated that Europol provided operational coordination, technical expertise and decryption support during the investigation. The agency has not disclosed the identity of the wallet owner or specific details surrounding the underlying criminal investigation.
This latest recovery follows a pattern seen in recent regulatory and enforcement actions targeting illicit cryptocurrency holdings. The seizure demonstrates how authorities are increasingly capable of accessing and recovering digital assets tied to criminal enterprises.
The timing of the seizure is notable, as it comes months after CAB gained access to a cryptocurrency wallet containing 500 Bitcoin in March. Irish media outlets linked that previous seizure to Clifton Collins, a convicted drug dealer. While CAB has not confirmed whether the latest seizure is connected to Collins, a wallet address associated with him moved 500 Bitcoin to an unknown address on Thursday, the same day the new seizure was announced.

According to reporting from The Irish Times, the wallet authorities accessed in March was one of 12 wallets that once held approximately 6,000 Bitcoin owned by Collins. The private keys to these wallets were reportedly stored on a single sheet of A4 paper, which was hidden inside the aluminum cap of a fishing rod case at his rental home.
Collins was arrested in 2017 after police discovered cannabis in his vehicle during a search. Law enforcement determined that Collins had used proceeds from his drug operation to purchase 6,000 Bitcoin in late 2011 and early 2012, spreading the holdings across multiple wallets for security purposes. After his arrest, Collins’ landlord allegedly discarded his belongings from the rental property. Collins has claimed the fishing rod case containing the wallet keys was stolen before the landlord entered the premises.
Wallets still associated with Collins currently hold approximately 4,500 Bitcoin, according to blockchain analysis data from Arkham. At current valuations, these remaining holdings are worth roughly $277 million as of Friday. The significant value of these assets highlights the substantial profits generated through illicit drug operations and the importance of law enforcement efforts to recover criminal proceeds.
The CAB’s recovery efforts represent a significant enforcement victory in the fight against cryptocurrency-enabled crime. The agency’s ability to access encrypted wallets and recover digital assets demonstrates the evolving capabilities of law enforcement in tracking and seizing blockchain-based criminal proceeds. The collaboration with Europol indicates a coordinated international approach to combating transnational cryptocurrency crime.

The 1,500 BTC seized by CAB in 2026 alone represents a substantial portion of criminal assets recovered across European jurisdictions. These seizures serve multiple purposes: they disrupt criminal financing networks, deter future cryptocurrency-based criminal activity, and provide law enforcement with valuable intelligence about how criminals store and move digital assets.
The case also illustrates the operational security challenges faced by criminals using cryptocurrency. Despite attempting to secure his Bitcoin holdings across multiple wallets, Collins’ storage method, a physical document hidden in a fishing rod case, ultimately proved vulnerable to loss and seizure. This contrasts with the sophisticated security practices employed by legitimate cryptocurrency holders and institutions.
As law enforcement agencies continue to develop expertise in cryptocurrency investigations, the recovery of criminal proceeds is likely to accelerate. The partnership between CAB and Europol demonstrates how international cooperation enhances the effectiveness of these operations, enabling agencies to share technical expertise and coordinate enforcement actions across borders.
