Chun Wang, the Chinese-born Maltese entrepreneur who founded F2Pool, one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining pools, has committed to joining SpaceX’s first planned manned mission to Mars. The crypto industry figure announced his participation after purchasing a ticket for the two-year interplanetary voyage, marking another instance of wealthy tech entrepreneurs funding ambitious space exploration initiatives.
SpaceX revealed the mission details on Thursday, confirming that the journey will extend beyond the moon, conduct a flyby of Mars, and return to Earth. Wang’s decision to fund and participate in the mission reflects growing confidence among cryptocurrency and tech leaders in commercial space travel capabilities. Before heading to Mars, Wang has also secured a seat on a planned weeklong commercial spaceflight around the moon that will launch ahead of the Mars mission.
Wang’s involvement in space exploration comes as part of a broader trend where tech entrepreneurs increasingly bankroll and participate in space ventures. This follows a pattern seen in similar high-profile space initiatives backed by figures like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Virgin Group co-founder Richard Branson, and Jared Isaacman, founder of payment processing company Shift4 Payments.
In a post on X on Friday, Wang explained his reasoning for the significant investment. “I believe that even without private investment in lunar flights, we will still reach the Moon, and likely very soon. As competition between the United States and China intensifies, governments will turn lunar bases into reality,” Wang stated. He emphasized that Mars represents a different challenge, one requiring private sector commitment to ensure progress within the current generation.
“I have no confidence that Mars will still happen within our lifetime. And I think I should do something about that. I hope that by purchasing a flyby mission to Mars, SpaceX will have another reason not to forget about Mars. Because we seriously shouldn’t defer Mars to our next generation,” Wang added.
The F2Pool founder’s commitment to space exploration builds on his previous experience with SpaceX ventures. Last April, Wang bankrolled and commanded the “Fram2” mission, another SpaceX flight that traveled over Earth’s poles while conducting scientific experiments. The four-person crew included German polar scientist Rabea Rogge, Norwegian cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen, and Australian Arctic adventurer Eric Philips. During that mission, the team performed experiments including taking X-rays in space and growing mushrooms in microgravity conditions.
F2Pool, which Wang founded in 2013, has become one of China’s most significant Bitcoin mining operations. According to mempool.space, the pool currently ranks as the third largest globally, commanding a market share exceeding 11.85 percent. The platform has played a crucial role in Bitcoin’s mining infrastructure since its establishment during the early years of cryptocurrency adoption.
Wang’s vision for the Mars mission extends beyond personal achievement. “I hope this mission can show the public that Mars is not just a point of light in a telescope. It is a real place, and humans can fly there and come back alive and come back healthy,” he explained. This perspective aligns with SpaceX’s broader ambitions for Mars exploration and eventual human settlement.
SpaceX has outlined an ambitious timeline for Mars operations. According to the company, Starship cargo flights to Mars for research, development, and exploratory missions are expected to commence no earlier than 2028. The ultimate objective involves establishing a self-sufficient city on Mars, which SpaceX estimates will require more than one million people and millions of tons of cargo transported across the interplanetary distance.
Wang’s participation in the Mars mission represents a significant moment for the cryptocurrency community’s intersection with space exploration. As detailed in Cointelegraph‘s ongoing coverage of crypto industry developments, prominent figures from the digital asset space continue expanding their influence into emerging technological frontiers. The mission demonstrates how cryptocurrency wealth is being channeled toward long-term human advancement goals beyond traditional finance.
The two-year Mars mission will test SpaceX’s capabilities for sustained interplanetary travel while advancing humanity’s understanding of Mars as a potential destination for future colonization efforts. Wang’s commitment to funding this venture signals continued confidence in commercial space exploration’s viability and importance for ensuring Mars exploration occurs within the current generation rather than being deferred to future decades.
